Evanilson_HOOK_URL scored the third goal at the 71st minute, finishing over goalkeeper Lammens following a through ball from Lewis Cook. Martínez came on at the 65th minute, replacing Ayden Heaven, but his presence did not change the outcome.

El United, meanwhile, was already missing its captain. Bruno Fernandes started on the bench and did not play. Four days earlier, after the 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, the Portuguese midfielder questioned the tactical decisions and said: "Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and make them uncomfortable."

On Saturday, Carrick described the team selection as "a purely sporting decision" and said the team was looking for "the performance we desire". The words did not translate into a better result on the field.

The calendar does not offer much breathing room. The next opponents are Chelsea, Aston Villa and Liverpool. At Old Trafford, I remember watching a team that competed even when the plan was not perfect. This one looked overwhelmed.

The next match will be against Chelsea. Whether the response arrives before then or another defeat pushes the Red Devils closer to the relegation zone is the question that will weigh on the dressing room.
